Eating Perfectly and Still Exhausted? Your Cells MightBe the Problem, Not Your Diet
By: Talia Sessel, APRN, FNP-C
Why a B-complex deficiency is one of the most common, and most overlooked, causes
of low energy in otherwise healthy patients.
If you’ve cleaned up your diet, cut the processed food, and you’re still dragging by 2pm, the
problem might not be what you’re eating... it might be whether your body can actually use
it.
At Etanah, this is one of the most common patterns we see: patients doing everything
“right” nutritionally, who are still fatigued, foggy, or just not themselves. Often, the missing
piece is simpler than people expect, a B-vitamin deficiency.
Why B Vitamins Matter More Than You Think
B vitamins (specifically B1, B2, B3, B5, and B6) are what your cells use to convert the
food you eat into usable energy. Without adequate levels, you can be eating a nutrient-
dense diet and still feel like you’re running on empty, because your body doesn’t have what
it needs to convert that nutrition into fuel.
These B vitamins also play a role well beyond energy:
Nervous system support: helping regulate how your body manages stress and
recovery
Metabolic function: supporting how efficiently your body processes nutrients
Mood regulation: B vitamins are cofactors in several neurotransmitter pathways
Hair and skin health: a frequent early sign of deficiency shows up here first
An Easy, Overlooked Fix
For the right patient, a weekly vitamin complex injection can help close these gaps in a way
that oral supplementation sometimes can’t, particularly for patients with absorption issues
or higher metabolic demands.
The key phrase here is for the right patient. This isn’t a blanket recommendation, it’s something we evaluate through labs and a full clinical picture, not guesswork.
The Takeaway
Sometimes it’s not what you’re eating. It’s what your body actually has available to use. If
you’ve optimized your diet and you’re still not feeling like yourself, it may be worth looking
deeper than the plate.
